The idea for this entry comes when I watched one of the episode in the latest (and last, huhu!) season of the Oprah Winfrey show. The episode reveals a jaw dropping fact that apparently, Oprah shares the same birth mother with an unknown woman who came out of nowhere in search of her biological mother and family. The woman from Milwaukee, known as Patricia was then discovered to be related to Oprah and was actually the daughter of Oprah’s mother, Vernita Lee. She was given to adoption when she was born thus leaving her clueless of who her mother is.
What amazes me is that even though Patricia had gathered proof that she was Oprah’s half sister, she did not simply go to the media and spills all the detail. I mean, with Oprah’s reputation, she could simply take the easy way out and reveals her ‘discovery’ to the media. Instead, she waited patiently and tried to contact her birth mother (Vernita Lee) and other family members including her nieces (the daughters of her late sister, also named Patricia). She was so unselfish that she kept the thing secret for almost two years. In the end, her patience paid off when she was re-united with her birth mother (despite being turned down twice by Vernita as she refused to see her because she felt that she was not ready at the time) and also Oprah, her big sister.
Personally, I admire Patricia for she had proven the real meaning of love towards her family (whom she never met and knew before). She’s a woman with such a big heart and strong will. After all that she had been through, growing up without family or relatives, moving from one foster home to another, became a single mother at the age of 17, she certainly deserve a happy ending and I’m glad that she finally got it.
God bless you Patricia!
